Netflix has brought a new adventure featuring Lara Croft with the release of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, an animated series that serves as a direct sequel to the game trilogy that redefined the heroine. And yes, it's amazing. The story picks up where Shadow of the Tomb Raider left off, presenting a more mature, yet still solitary, Lara as she embarks on new and dangerous global missions in search of ancient artifacts.
For those who followed the game trilogy—starting with Tomb Raider (2013), continuing with Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and concluding with Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)—the series brings familiarity, but also new layers to Lara's growth. In the games, we witnessed her transformation from an inexperienced survivor into a fearless archaeologist. Now, the animated series dives deeper into her skills and relationships, especially her internal struggle between remaining independent and learning to trust others. Yes, her father remains a key part of her motivation, but this time, the addition of Roth—her father’s friend and somewhat of a mentor to Lara—adds an extra dimension to her journey.
An interesting point to note here is the deeper exploration of Lara's friendships, something the games started to touch on, but now takes center stage.
Characters like Jonah and Roth return, as Lara realizes that despite her tendency to work alone, relying on allies can be crucial to overcoming the challenges she faces.
In addition to interpersonal relationships, the animation delivers intense action, showcasing Lara’s physical prowess in various combat scenarios. The series revisits her weapon skills, which evolved throughout the games, and also introduces new fighting styles and physical challenges that emphasize her resilience and creativity as she explores mysterious and deadly tombs.
With Chinese mythology as its backdrop, the series promises new mysteries and puzzles for Lara to solve as she pursues artifacts linked to ancient legends. In fact, to reach Chinese mythology, the first episode takes place in Chile, our neighbor here in South America. It could’ve been Brazil, though. =D
With standout production and a narrative that balances action and mythological exploration, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft presents itself as a must-watch chapter for Lara Croft fans, further expanding the heroine's legacy. The series has been available on Netflix since October 10.
